Video of the Week: Caine’s Arcade

Wednesday, June 27th, 2012

Hello and good day loyal blog readers. Those of us who had our hopes and dreams of football glory dashed at the weekend may need a little cheering up this week. So as a little midweek mood-lifter I thought I’d share a heartwarming film I saw a couple of months back following a 9-year-old boy who had a dream of running a successful cardboard arcade in the back of his Dad’s car part store. He’s a cardboard Gadget genius.

Shiny New Things

Wednesday, June 13th, 2012

Good afternoon chaps and chapesses, we’ve got a huge number of new products coming in for the summer this year, and I thought I’d take this opportunity to talk you through some brand new recent additions.

TALKINGCLOCK

Firstly, the Science Museum’s official clock! Far more accurate and detailed than your garden variety alarm clock, the science clock tells you the humidity, temperature and a host of other information. It’s also great for people like me who find it hard to open their eyes in the morning, as bashing the top of it will result in it telling you the time out loud so you can judge whether you really have to get up or if you can afford just 5 more minutes.

UKSCRATCHMAP

The ever popular scratch map has been shrunk down to the size of the UK & Ireland, but by being smaller it’s become far more detailed than before. How many of our nation’s counties have you been to? Have you seen what Scotland, Wales, or the two Irelands have to offer? Keep track of your travels and learn more about the places you’ve been.

MANAPRONSummer means it’s time for the men to make fire and overcook sausages, but to do that they’re going to need more than just an apron. How about a manly cooking overall that holds beer, phone, tongs and an abundance of other objects that make it feel more like the Bat-belt than an apron? It’s a great gift for father’s day and an excellent addition to the summer range.

WATERBOMBWAR

Finally we come to my personal favourite, childish though it may be. There’s nothing better than drenching each other in a summery water fight, and we’ve got a huge range of aquatic warfare items to arm you in the battle against boredom. The water bomb set contains a slingshot, more than 250 water balloons, carry cases and quick-fill caps to make it an excellent addition to your arsenal.

Like it! Review and Competition: Epic Stamps

Friday, October 28th, 2011

Like It!

This competition is now closed! Thanks for entering.

Introducing “Like It!” – the blog feature in which we more or less just get to play with the gadgets and gizmos we like best and show you what makes them so cool.

But you know what they say; if you love something, let it go. We’ll be letting go of one of each item that we review weekly as it will be up for grabs on our Facebook page. All you have to do is to ‘like’ our page (aha, see what we did there?) and go to the competition tab where you can enter your details for the chance to win. Every Friday we’ll announce the winner and we’ll have another top gadget to give away.

Speaking of winning: here’s the first item we’ve chosen for Like It! – a pair of Epic Win and Epic Fail stamps. How appropriate. Simply head over to the competition page and enter your details to be in with a chance of winning.

Epic Stamps

Win!

Here at Gadget HQ. we’ve been using the stamps to highlight office successes and disasters. Our most notable failure this week has been our attempt to carve some Halloween pumpkins. I had high hopes of carefully crafting our logo into the side of a large vegetable. Unfortunately as I began to cut into my pumpkin, it became clear that it had seen better days as I was knocked backwards off my chair by the most evil smell I’ve ever experienced. I disposed of my rotten vegetable. This may have been an epic fail but not more-so than Murray’s sorry looking pumpkin which he lovingly named Jerry. Pass me the stamp…

Pumpkin Fail

Fail!

So we may not be sculptors but at least we’re handsome… ahem. Well Murray clearly thinks his face is an epic win at any rate. We were thinking that these could definitely come in handy at parties… or maybe speed dating.

Murray Win

Win...?

What I’d really like to see is these in use in schools. How much cooler is your teacher going to be if they use modern internet slang to mark your work? That’s a hundred times better than the old smiley face. Contrary to what our behaviour may suggest, we all left school some time ago and so we don’t happen to have any old jotters around to test them out on. I did however get some of my painstakingly detailed artwork evaluated. Hmm.

Artfail

Epic Fail!

So we definitely like the epic stamps and if you’d like to get your hands on a set, all you have to do is to head over to Facebook now, click  the competition tab and enter your details for the chance to win. Good luck!

Guess Who’s Back?

Friday, September 9th, 2011

The good Doctor has been back on our screens for a couple of weeks now and we’re loving it. The entirely eccentric Matt Smith has been bounding around the TARDIS as usual, brandishing his sonic screwdriver at everybody and making all the girls blush.

So far the Time Lord, his faithful Scottish companion and that other bloke have come up against a miniaturised justice league piloting a shape-shifting robot from what looks suspiciously like the bridge of the Starship Enterprise…

Dr Who meets Star Trek

Make it so... wait... wrong sci-fi.

…and of course dollies. ‘Orrible dollies with no eyes. ‘Orrible dollies with no eyes that look a bit like Jonathan Davis from Korn. It was enough to have you cowering behind the sofa like the kids did back when Patrick Troughton was the doctor.

Jonathan Davis Vs Creepy Doll

Korn dolls were all the rage in '05

I wasn’t surprised to learn that the last episode was written by Mark Gatiss, who is generally top-notch I reckon. If you’ve seen The League of Gentleman or last year’s Sherlock on the BBC, you’ll recognise him. Partly because he’s charismatic, but mostly because he’s dead creepy.

If you’ve got any Who fanatics in your household, don’t forget that we’ve got gifts covered for them. There’s the Adipose stress toy for their desk and the TARDIS mug would be perfect for when you’re settling down tomorrow night for the next instalment. This clip from tomorrow’s episode promises killer robots that look as if they were made by Apple. Surely that just means your death would be more stylish and desirable than other more affordable deaths. We’ll have to wait and find out.

Technology looks good with John Lewis

Monday, August 15th, 2011

For many people these days, it’s not enough for our technological gizmo’s to be functional and unfathomably intricate in design; they’ve got to look good too of course. We gadget-enthusiasts are highly fashionable people, we can’t be seen lugging some ancient grey laptop into a trendy coffee shop.

Luckily the folks at John Lewis understand our need for classy contraptions and they’ve given us a rather dapper red 500GB hard drive worth over £69 to give away to one of our lucky blog readers. You’ll even get a cool case to keep it safe.

And you can’t get much more stylish than the new Dell Switch laptops with interchangeable lids. John Lewis are also offering fans the chance to win a Dell Switch and a Design Studio lid of their choice until 17th August to celebrate Dell’s search for a new lid design.

Competition Prize

Win this smart red hard drive and trendy travel case.

With all this sleek modern technology on offer, we started thinking about how different computers were thirty-odd years ago and wondering what on earth we did before they could access the internet? Did people go to each other’s houses and write their names in each other’s photo albums before Facebook? Did anyone know what Stephen Fry was eating for breakfast pre-Twitter? How did we ever prove anyone wrong before Google!?

All you have to do to be in with the chance of winning our prize is to tell us about the first time you ever used a computer; whether you were illuminated in the green glow of a monochrome monitor or sitting amongst the wrapping paper with a shiny new laptop on a Christmas morning. Do you remember your first ever search on the World Wide Web? (Bet it was your own name right? Yeah we thought so.)

Just leave your comment in the box below, we’ll choose an entrant at random and announce the winner at the end of the month on the 31st of August. Best of luck and we hope you enjoy reminiscing.

John Lewis sell a wide range of laptops and laptop accessories, as well as other gadgets such as iPods and the iPad 2.

Gadgets Look Back At The Week

Friday, March 27th, 2009

Its yet again another Fun Friday!

How did you all get on with your positive week? I started this week by challenging myself and experiencing new things. So when I was offered Monkfish I naturally accepted and didn’t think any else of it…I mean how bad could it be? I like fish?

Little did I know that this so called fish (I could think of other words) was going to be the worst meal I ever had to endure. OK this may be a slight exaggeration, but I am almost certain the experience was made worse by the fact that when sharing this trauma with the gadgets team they felt they need to google me a picture. Well all I can say is never again will I not check what I’m about to devour in future, that way I’ll know what I have agreed to eat does not look like the ‘Elephant Man’ of the sea world.

Wednesday came and my week was on the up as new stock arrived for testing and photographing. Now this may not sound that much of a highlight but I assure you I was very excited to see my personalised office mug. This was of course the drama queen with a little pink character on it complete with little tiara (photo below), the resemblance was uncanny. It didn’t stop there, we all had a great chuckle with the laughing monkey. So simple when rolling around laughing but so effective and the laughter was soo contagious.

Now the best item I thought that came in was the I’m as big as wall chart…whilst measuring the hieght of everyone I found my dreams were shattered. I was under the requirements of what you need to reach to be an astronaut. (Huff!) It seems now I’m forced to rethink my plans to visit the moon this summer holiday. On a cheerier note Dirk was found to be as tall as a Grandmother Clock and before you say it…. yes we know that’s not that tall, bless him. As for Mandy who is tall enough to visit the moon (grrr) I hope it rains and there’s no space on the moon craters because of all the other tourists!

It was back to school for me on Thursday when the opportunity arose to have a play with the gadgets camera and photograph the stock. I was soon redirecting the lights, rearranging the poses of the laughing monkey and getting stuck in with the clicks and flashes… David Bailey eat your heart out! I have to say I definitely prefer to be behind the camera than in front. Shame to admit but this gadgets girl is not exactly going to be Britain’s next top model. I’ll leave the posing to the gadgets!

Till next week…..

Enjoy your weekend everyone!

Pocket Sized Digital Photo Display

Friday, January 30th, 2009

Hi there everyone! So I bet you cant wait to see what great gadget it is I have for you today? Well say hello to the Digital Picture Keyring.

Now I’m quite a happy snappy person when I’m out and about…always taking the camera to gain keep sakes and funny poses to show off. Not to mention the repetitive cat photos that I shamefully like to inflict on everyone I meet.
The photo keyring is so easy to use and it keeps the pictures neat and away so I’m not rummaging through my purse or phone. It holds up to 60-100 so I don’t need to be selective and also I can turn it off and on so there is no need to recharge everyday either. To install, unlike most things, its a simple software installation and USB cable to add on your photos, which is great because i can keep updating with my latest photos.
Therefore I see this as an all round pleasing gadget that would be great on anyone’s keys!.

An End To 26 Years Of Puzzled Perplexity

Thursday, January 15th, 2009

In the news this week was the Rubik’s Cube, but at the same time apparently so inept, that it has taken him 26 years to complete it!

First I must say kudos to the guy that he has not resorted to the various sites on the internet that tell you how to complete the cube from any given point, I know I would have by now! Still, I can’t help but feel that after 26 years of fairly hard-core fiddling, he may have merely stumbled across the solution. Still, I suppose I can’t really talk having never properly attempted to complete a cube myself.

If you feel like giving something like this a go, why not have a go at our Retro Puzzle Cube, or Sudoku Puzzle Cube both available for just £3.95!
