New Star Wars lines now in stock!

Monday, July 23rd, 2012

I’ve just met you and this is crazy but I’ve got an awesome Star Wars iPhone case so call me maybe?

If you haven’t seen the incredibly geeky and painstakingly edited Star Wars cover of Carly Rae Jepsen’s brain-hijacking pop single yet, you must have been living in the stomach of a Sarlacc for the past month. It’s ridiculous but it’s also Star Warsy so therefore it’s cool. Check it out:

And it just so happens that if CRJ does fancy giving me a call (which she is very welcome to do), I’ll probably be answering it using my force-tastic Stormtrooper iPhone case, here it is alongside the R2 version. In’t it neat?

Star Wars iPhone Case

They’re brand new in stock alongside some other cool new Star Wars lines, including the ‘Off the Wall’ alarm clock. Built to resemble Luke’s lightsaber training module, the clock requires a small wallop against your bedroom wall in the morning in order to turn off the alarm. This act of chucking something through the air is a great way to stir oneself from slumber of a morning and the clock looks awesome too.

And finally, there’s no need to strain yourself trying to use the force to open your bottled pop or lager. Use your lightsaber instead, or more accurately, this lightsaber bottle opener with proper sound effects and everything. Nice. Plus there’s plenty more where all this came from in our Star Wars category.

Video of the Week: Caine’s Arcade

Wednesday, June 27th, 2012

Hello and good day loyal blog readers. Those of us who had our hopes and dreams of football glory dashed at the weekend may need a little cheering up this week. So as a little midweek mood-lifter I thought I’d share a heartwarming film I saw a couple of months back following a 9-year-old boy who had a dream of running a successful cardboard arcade in the back of his Dad’s car part store. He’s a cardboard Gadget genius.

Teach Parents Tech

Wednesday, May 30th, 2012

Let’s begin today with a simple maths equation:

Every single person born since computer use became widespread has experienced the annoyance of their parents, grandparents or other adult relatives asking them to show them how to “send an electronic mail”, “browse the interweb”, or “turn the blinkin’ screen on”, and I think I speak for everyone here when I say it’s incredibly frustrating.

You know you should be patient with them (after all, they were patient with you when you were a wee nipper struggling to put your t-shirt on the right way round), but computers are so easy to those of us who grew up with them that it’s just impossible for us to comprehend how a fully-grown adult can’t grasp the concept of copy and paste.

Now, as with basically everything else in the entire world, Google have come to the rescue. The boffins at Google Towers have created Send Your Parents A Tech Support Care Package, an unnecessarily wordy but very useful website that does exactly what it says on the tin. Fill out the 30-second form on the front page and you can send them a personalised email that will teach them everything they need to know about your chosen subject.

Now if they could only invent a time machine so I could go back and retrieve the hours of my life lost before they’d thought of it…

A Spot Of General Interest

Wednesday, May 16th, 2012

Good afternoon Gadgeteers, we had so many ideas for a blog today that we couldn’t narrow it down to just focusing on one thing, so instead we’ve decided to share three of the insane/interesting/cool things we’ve discovered today.

Number One: This Guy Is Awesome!

Jumping off of big things is scary. Like, really scary. Even with the safety of a net or a giant air bag, most people would struggle to jump from twice their height, let alone a massive 30 metres in the air. Not so Daniel Mosl, a man who has now been bestowed with the title of Gadgets Legend. Rumours that Daniel had his fear glands removed were started by us just now, but we wouldn’t be at all surprised to find out that it was true.

Number Two: These Speakers Are Cool.

Much more gadgety and only slightly less cool, these transparent speakers are both Swedish and barmy, which is an excellent combination in our eyes! Although you do have to assemble them yourself, all that means is that you get a nice feeling of accomplishment every time you look at the speakers that you built with nothing but your bare hands (and an instruction manual).

Number Three: This Is Cute.

If you’re a regular follower of the blog you’ll know that we love it when people turn ordinary objects into something more, and this use of clothes pegs as picture holders is flippin’ marvellous! I’ve half a mind to steal it for myself and hang a million photos of my smiling, ruggedly handsome face in Gadget HQ.

Gadget Team’s Top 5 Apps (for your rainy weekend)

Friday, April 20th, 2012

The weekend is almost here Gadget heads and from the size of the hail stones crashing to earth outside our office window, it looks like some of us at least are going to be stuck indoors. But never fear, with our modern devices, there’s plenty to do from the comfort of your own home and we’ve compiled a list of some of our favourite Apps to keep you entertained over a whole rainy weekend.

Draw Something - iOS / Android

Draw Something

Let’s start with the obvious shall we? No matter what platform you’re using, you’re missing a cultural phenomenon if you’re missing out on Draw Something. Everyone is playing, from Celebs to your Grandma and if you’ve ever had a game of Pictionary, you’ll already understand the premise. Just don’t be surprised when you submit your hours of painstakingly detailed artwork to be met with a stick man and a scrawled description. Some people have no respect for rules.

HeyTell – iOS / Android

HeyTell

This app was recommended to me by a friend of mine who works in a recording studio with his phone switched off most of the time. It’s basically voicemail but without the initial attempt at a phone call. Think voice conversation but with the back and forth flow of text messaging, meaning you don’t get tied up in long conversations. Also it’s faster than texting and much easier to convey enthusiasm or sarcasm. Not to mention you can bother your mates by sending them ridiculous messages.

Absolute 80s Remixer – iOS

80s Remixer

I’ve spent far too much time pretending to be some kind of cool retro DJ using this app. It only comes with 2 songs to begin with but then one of those songs is The Look of Love by ABC and who needs anything else? “That’s the look… that’s the look…”

Planetary – iOS (for iPad)

Planetary

Mandy is our resident iPad user and she likes to turn her music library into an entire galaxy, transforming genres, artists and albums into stars, planets and moons so that she can float through space while listening to her favourite songs. Pink Floyd fan you ask? You betcha.

Baby Monkey (Going Backwards on a pig) – iOS

Baby Monkey

It’s a baby monkey… going backwards… on a pig. A game born from a Youtube video sensation can only be great. And of course Murray loves it. Just don’t attempt to beat his high score; unless you want trouble…

Make Do & Mend: Gadgets Style!

Monday, March 19th, 2012

Welcome back! Did you have a good weekend? Glad to hear it. Today we’re going to talk to you about recycling, but don’t run away just yet! We won’t be admonishing you for not doing your bit, we’re going to be showing you some of the most innovative, interesting and incredibly insane repurposing attempts we’ve ever seen!

Tribhüsli

This is the Tribhüsli, four small CD cases that have been turned into a greenhouse and shrub protector. Sick of woodland creatures chowing down on your cabbages? Want your sprouts to get more sun? Pop down to HMV and buy 4 obsolete CD singles!

T-Fresh

Tea in the toilet! Whilst it’s probably best not to think about what colour this might turn the water, a strong teabag is bound to be cheaper than an official refill pack, and it opens up a whole world of new smells for your bathroom.

Fensterschlafer

Sam’s own personal favourite, this ingenious adaptation of an old pair of swimming goggles means he’ll be able to sleep for hours next time he’s off touring the country with Scholars. Although Mandy and I think a cushion would probably do the job better…

Sommerpedale

Cycling barefoot should be wonderful, but pedals and bare feet go together like a horse and marriage. But by attaching a couple of washing pads to your pedals, you can have that cool breeze on your tootsies and avoid foot pain!

Nuggiweg

Now, I’m not a parent, but if I wanted to severely injure my toddler then I imagine I’d invent something like this. The inventor claims it’s a harmless miniature cactus stand, but I think it’s safe to say that it’s a risk you probably shouldn’t take if you have a baby in the house.

For more insane images, check out the list HERE.

Gadget HQ Investigates: Cats Are Smarter Than People.

Wednesday, March 14th, 2012

Remember the “cats with thumbs advert” that Cravendale ran last year? (If you haven’t seen it, it’s at the bottom of the blog). Hahaha, ah Cravendale. What a ridiculous concept. Cats with thumbs that are going to take over the world. Can you even imagine if cats were smarter than people or had thumbs? Even if they had one of those things we’d be in trouble, let alone if they somehow had… both… Uh-oh.

Friskies, the cat food manufacturer, introduced the world to their new iPad game “You vs Cat” at the SXSW festival in Texas. The premise is simple: you take on your cat at a game of ice hockey and win, because you are at the top of the evolutionary chain and your brain is roughly 47x larger than the average cats. Except that isn’t quite the whole story…

You Vs Cat

You vs Cat has an online leaderboard where we can see who’s winning. At the time of writing, the cats are winning 48,080 – 37,540; that’s a staggering 10,540 game advantage that the cats have accumulated already. It’s equal parts impressive and terrifying, because if they can beat us at air hockey who knows what they’ll start taking to next! But it’s okay, right? Because they don’t have thumbs… Right? Right?

It's a cat... with a thumb.

Oh. My. God. Batten down the hatches, men! Run for the hills! Women and children first, everybody overboard! This is, without question, the most convincing proof of the impending 2012 apocalypse that I’ve ever seen. Cats with thumbs. They can open doors for themselves, they can hold a pen and develop writing skills, they can even open their own packets of cat food! We’ve become redundant overnight, and one can only assume that they’re already planning to throw the first punch in the impending Humans vs Cats war.

Be afraid. Be very afraid.

iPhone Insanity: Charge Your iPhone With A Face Mask

Wednesday, February 29th, 2012

The iPhone is both the best and most frustrating invention of the modern era. It’s fantastic, it gives us an almighty amount of information and communications at our fingertips and it’s one of the must-have gadgets of the 21st century. However, the damn thing drinks battery power like Charlie Sheen in a tiger blood bar. We’ve got a couple of portable chargers on our site, and there are several others out there, but today a man named Joao Paulo Lammoglia has come up with the most absolutely insane way to charge an iPhone in the brief but technologically eventful history of Apple.

The AIRE mask does exactly what you’re thinking “well it looks like it does that, but surely that would just be mental?”. You charge your iPhone (or iPod, we don’t discriminate) by breathing into the mask, which uses what we can only assume is a combination of witchcraft and Star Wars technology to keep your device topped up.

Actually, it’s reportedly just miniature wind turbines that spin when you breathe, but we thought our initial description sounded cooler. Although it’s an astounding piece of technology, we’re willing to bet that it will never be a success basically down to the fact that you look like Sub Zero from Mortal Kombat when wearing it; it’s not going to do you any good to have a fully charged iPhone when you’re already finished off every single one of your friends in a fit of violent, 2D 16-bit rage.

To be fair to the designer, it’s also been made so that it works in your sleep, which could be useful if you were actually able to sleep with a mask like that on your face. It’s only a prototype, so we can’t be sure, but I’m willing to bet that the turbines make a bit of noise too, so you won’t even have to snore loudly to be awoken by your own breathing.

Don’t get us wrong, we appreciate the concept and think it’s definitely something that has potential… but not like this. Back to the drawing board, Mr. Lammoglia. Thanks for your time.

Water brilliant invention

Monday, November 21st, 2011

Just like this.

Last year, whilst playing football in the park, I knocked over a bottle of water, drowning my iPhone in a small reservoir of H2Oh-no-I’ve-ruined-my-phone. It stopped working almost immediately and I had to pay an insurance excess of £50 to get it fixed, all because my shooting is somewhat below-par.

Why am I telling you this? Well, partly to show off that I have an iPhone (ladies, please, one at a time), but primarily because everyday phone incidents like mine are one step closer to being a thing of the past thanks to one of the most incredible new technologies I’ve ever seen. An American company has invented the NeverWet spray, a coating for your handset that repels oil and water so strongly that you can completely submerge your smart phone and by some sort of miracle it will still work. You can continue to receive calls with your phone utterly immersed in water; it’s practically unbreakable!

Presumably, you won’t be able to answer it; apart from anything else, how are you going to talk and breathe with your mouth underwater? But it’s still an unbelievably useful and effective invention that could save us millions a year on insurance claims and new phones. How does it work? Who knows, but it’s almost definitely too complicated for a heathen like me to understand anyway. You’ll probably have to see it for you to believe it, so here’s a link to a video so you can look at it in action; get ready to be amazed.

AquaCase

As always, the only fear people have about it is the cost; it won’t be officially unveiled until next year’s CES show, so obviously they haven’t released anything about its price yet, but these days it’s hard to imagine something so useful being cheap and cheerful. Maybe someday it will be cheap enough for ordinary people like you or I, but certainly for the first few months of its release, it’ll probably be a costly addition to your phone care kit.

If, like me, you think it’s going to be out of your price range or you can’t wait that long, then what you want is the AquaCase. It’s available for your smart phone or iPad, and does a cracking job of keeping your device safe and dry, even when you’re holding it underwater!
