My top 5 favourite Christmas Stocking Gifts

Friday, December 7th, 2012

Over the last couple of weeks we’ve had loads of new items arriving in our warehouse ready for the big Christmas rush. Today I thought I’d share with you my top 5 favourite new products which are perfect as stocking filler gifts.

Applingz – £14.95

At first glance the Applingz is just another super soft cuddy toy. However insert your iPhone, download the app and they become an interactive friend that responds to touch, sound and motion.  The Applingz will keep sons, daughters, nephews entertained for hours plus your phone will be nice and safe as the toy acts as a protective case.

R2D2 Pizza Cutter – £12.95

The ideal gift for any Star Wars fans out there, a pizza cutter that makes R2D2 sounds when you use it!! Not just a novelty gift this little droid has a sharp cutting blade (which can be removed for washing) which actually works really well!

Silly Sneaker Socks – £5.95

Everyone loves novelty sock (well I do) and this year everyone has been going silly over these novelty socks. The sneaker socks have been made to resemble the popular converse shoes and are available in three colours, blue, red and pink.

MOTD Mug Theme Tune Mug – £8.95

Who doesn’t know a football fanatic that always glued to the TV either watching a game or Match Of The Day? I definitely do! And they are going to get one of these mugs, this novelty mug play the MOTD theme tune every time the mug is picked up, yes that is EVERY TIME so choose carefully who you want to give this gift to!

Sneaker Pencil case – £6.95

Lastly we have the sneaker pencil case. Again another item made to resemble converse shoes however these cases are super realistic. The upper is made of canvas material and you have to untie the laces before you can undo the zip and put your stuff in them. They come in 6 vibrant colours, purple being my favourite and can be used as a case for anything, not just pens and pencils.

I hope you like my top 5!  Have a great weekend.

Gadgets.co.uk Festival Survival Guide 2012

Friday, June 29th, 2012

FestivalSurvivalGuide

Music festivals have got to be one of the greatest things about British summer time. It’s all about camping out, spending time with friends and seeing some great bands. But while you may have an idyllic image in your head of stretching out on a patch of lush green grass in the sunshine while Bon Iver gently croons into the microphone, don’t forget that there will be rain, there will be mud and there will be a horrific toilet situation.

This is our festival survival guide for 2012. Drawing on all our collective festival knowledge, this guide is intended to help you make the most of your loud-music-in-a-field experience, wherever it may be. And no this guide does not apply to you if you’re VIP or worse, staying in a hotel off-site. Because unless you have a real legitimate reason for doing so, it’s just lame man.

Do:

  1. Take an easy-to-use tent. If it’s a new one you might want to test out putting it up at home first where you’ve definitely got both daylight and sobriety on your side.
  2. Take a Sleeping bag. Unless you’re a very confident an attractive person in which case you can risk finding someone else’s to share.
  3. Take enough money. Which you’ll need for booze and overpriced festival food. You’ll need to pay for everything in cash but there are usually ATM machines on-site. You might want to consider setting some spare cash aside in case you lose your purse or wallet, in which case attaching it to your keys is a good idea.
  4. Take enough toilet roll. Where you’re going you’re going to need it as it’s rarely provided. Make sure you take enough to see you through and consider also taking a small lightto guide you to the loo’s in the dark, as well as some hand sanitiser.

    Glowing Toilet Roll

    Glow-in-the-dark loo roll anyone?

  5. Take a mobile Phone. Festivals are massive and you’ll need one to stay in touch with your friends. Festivals sometimes have a charging facility but you’ll have to queue so it’s a good idea to take a separate emergency charger of your own.
  6. Try to plan where you’re going and tell your friends. If you want to try and see all your favourite acts, you might have to miss the end of one to make another and vice versa so check the stage times to avoid disappointment. If you tell your friends who you’re watching, it gives them a better chance of finding you if one of you gets lost and can’t get through to you on the phone.

Don’t:

  1. Take too much booze with you. Many people overdo it on the ‘crates-o-lager’. You’ll need to bring something you don’t mind drinking warm (no fridge in most tents) and remember that most festivals don’t let you take your own cans inside the main arena anyway. Happily you can then buy cold beers once you’re inside.
  2. Put a padlock on your tent. It makes it obvious that you’ve got something in there worth stealing.
  3. Try and cook all your own food. Seriously? You’re going to try to make beans and cheese on toast with a camping stove while seriously inebriated at 3am? Festival food is of a pretty high standard these days and you can always bring a big bag of crisps to fill in any gaps.
  4. Wear your best and most expensive clothes. If it’s bad weather, you’re only going to be able to pull off one look: ‘mud wrestler’. If want to protect your shoes, a great idea is to cover them up with an overshoe, especially if you’ve got some nifty Festival Feetwith which to do so.

They look like shoes but they 'aint.

But above all enjoy yourself of course! And let us know if you think there’s anything we’ve missed in the comments below.

Murray’s Surprise Euro 2012 Quiz

Friday, June 15th, 2012

Murray as you may well know if you’re a regular reader of our blog, is our resident blogger and customer service guy. He’s a proud man, a competitive man and a ridiculous football enthusiast. He relishes any chance to demonstrate his extensive knowledge of the beautiful game and frankly his level of commitment to Tottenham Hotspur has surpassed ‘impressive’ and is bordering on ‘slightly worrying’.

So since today is the big day for England as they go up against Sweden to fight for a place in the next round of Euro 2012, I thought I’d put Murray’s knowledge to the test. I managed to find this nifty little Premier League Euro quiz online at Football365.com and now Murray will face a 20 question challenge so that he can prove once and for all that he’s the ultimate football brainbox. Watch out, this could get Messi…

And the results are in. Murray managed a very decent 12/20 considering how tough the questions were (anything under 10 and he would have never lived it down). Happily though, anything under 15 and he’s buying the beer for tonight’s game so we’re all winners! Why not give the quiz a go yourself and enjoy tonight’s match. Come on England!!!

Happy Father’s Day!

Wednesday, May 23rd, 2012

Happy Father’s Day! Wait, what? It’s not Father’s Day? Ah I see why you’re confused, please allow me to explain. You see, here in the magical world of internet shopping we tend to celebrate holidays a couple of weeks before the rest of the country so that there’s plenty of time for us to deliver your gifts in time for the actual holiday, so while you won’t be celebrating Father’s Day for another fortnight, as far as we’re concerned it’s father’s day now!

This year, we’re doing something a bit special for Father’s day (or rather, Sam’s doing something a bit special for Father’s day) by introducing the Gadgets Dads! Whether you’ve got a Techie Dad, Sporty Dad, Joker Dad, Foodie Dad, and Retro Dad, there’s a great selection of gifts for every kind of father out there.

Norman the Techie Dad is heavily into his Gadgets, priding himself on his techno know-how and ability to fix anything electrical.

Terry the Sporty Dad is the most competitive of the bunch, he plays and watches sport at every opportunity and, more often than not, drags his poor unwilling kids into it too!

Kevin the Joker Dad likes to think he’s a hoot, but really he’s a constant source of embarrassment to his children with his out-of-date puns and cheesy t-shirts.

Heston the Foodie Dad has taken on the domestic duties and excelled at them, creating fabulous meals for the family and always happy to splash out on dinner at a fancy restaurant.

Lionel the Retro Dad lives to reminisce about his past glories, the night clubs of the 70s, classic 80s movies and, of course, Van Halen. Rock ‘n roll!

Sound like your dad? You know one of them does! Why not leave us a comment and let us know how well we’ve captured your dad!

How I Saved The Day: A Kettle’s Tale

Monday, April 30th, 2012

Residents of Gadget HQ were shocked this afternoon when Terry, the office’s beloved Boiley Egg, was found to be missing. Head Ranger Mandy Evans was the first to discover the disappearance, checking the Egg’s enclosure at approximately 13:30 and finding it empty. Police Chief Barnaby has issued a statement announcing that the Gadget HQ Police Force will be searching round the clock for their ovular friend, and appealed for anyone with any information to please come forward.

Missing: An Egg

The drama did not end there. Already distraught from the disappearance of the egg some sources are calling her “best friend” and “trusted confidant”, Miss Evans had brought in two raw eggs with the intention of using Terry the Egg to boil them. However, displaying her trademark steely resolve, Miss Evans announced that she would not be beaten.

“Adapt and overcome, that’s my motto. Don’t think you can’t do it because you don’t have the things you need,” she stated. To the amazement of her colleagues, she dropped her eggs into the office’s electric kettle and flicked the switch. Although she did concede that “I’m not going to be able to get it as perfect as I would have done had I been using a Boiley Egg”, Evans laughed in the face of her nay-saying co-workers and kept reboiling the kettle for five long minutes.

We WISH this was our kettle.

Emptying the eggs out onto her plate, Miss Evans tentatively peeled back the first few fragments of shell to reveal two boiled eggs in excellent condition, delightedly exclaiming “Awhhh look at that! How is that for a good egg?” The praise from her co-workers, though begrudging, was well deserved, and ensured that this story did have an eggstra special happy ending.

To enjoy your own cute little Boiley Egg, have a look at him here!

Sporcle Friday!

Friday, April 27th, 2012

What time is it? Oh come now, you know what time it is. I know what time it is. Sam and Mandy know what time it is. Even Academy Award Nominated Actor Woody Harrelson knows what time it is!

Yeah he does!

It’s Sporcle Friday time! Once again, there’s no real theme to this weeks quizzes, just whatever we thought sounded fun at the time. The first round of this league was very exciting with me and Mandy tied at the top and Sam bringing up the rear, but would someone take a commanding lead this week? (Spoiler alert: Yes!)

Quiz One: Test Your Memory

A simple memory test to start with, but an unforgiving one. A single mistake would result in the end of the quiz, as Mandy found out when she scored a paltry 3/11; to be fair, she’s very tired today, and Sam and I were absolutely fine with it! Things looked good for the two of us, and we both scored maximum points to win 2 points each. Sam was now level with Mandy, while I’d taken a 2 point lead.

Quiz Two: Sins, Dwarves and Spice Girls

In all honesty, any quiz with this as the title is probably going to be the best quiz in the world, but unfortunately Mandy will never know! A computer malfunction meant that she was unable to complete this quiz; as compensation, she now has a Double-Points-Joker to play on a quiz of her choosing to make up for it. With the Supreme Quizzing Machine now out of today’s running, Sam and I went head to hear. He performed admirably, naming an excellent 18/19 answers correctly but, as you can probably tell by the smug tone of my writing, I achieved another perfect score! With a maximum 4 points for today’s quizzing, it looks like the Reflection of Perfection is on course to win the second Gadgets Sporcle League, but there’s a long way to go yet…

So, the table at the end of week two:

1st: Murray “The Reflection Of Perfection” Dougall – 7 points

2nd: Sam “The Man That Gravity Forgot” Nicholls – 4 points

3rd: Mandy “The Supreme Quizzing Machine” Evans – 3 points + 1 game in hand

In search of Fish and Chips

Monday, April 23rd, 2012

If you’re in England, you’ll probably be aware that it’s St George’s day today. And just in case you don’t really know who St George is, he supposedly bumped off a dragon and saved a princess. Quite a good bloke then probably.

And it being St George’s day makes it a good excuse to partake in some indulgent English activities. I’m not talking about going out and getting plastered, I’m more interested in the greatest part of our English culinary heritage: Fish and Chips.

fish-and-chips

Great fish and chips is a fine art and the nice folks at the Independant have put together a list of the top 50 fish and chip restaurants across the country so that you can make sure you never end up with soggy batter again.

Feel free to be adventurous with your choice of fish. Although our nation’s obsession with cod saw them all but gobbled up completely back in 2000, cod is no longer in danger of being taken off the menu and will always be the best in my opinion. Although mushy peas are a neccessity I’m afraid, even for all you non believers.
