Keeps Your Eyes Peeled….

Thursday, March 31st, 2011

The end of another week, and indeed another month, is nearly upon us, and looking at the calendar you can’t help but notice that April the 1st is looming, threatening to pull the carpet out from under you when you least expect it. I always enjoy reading the papers on April Fool’s day to see if I can spot what ingenious jokes they have managed to come up with!

Of course it isn’t always the case that the most unbelievable stories are fakes, they do say that the truth is stranger than fiction, and there have been numerous instances down the years where real news has been dismissed as an April Fool’s joke. As far back as 1946 there was the Aleutian Island earthquake tsunami, which killed 165 people in Hawaii and Alaska as they believed the Tsunami warnings to be pranks. In 1979 Iran declared April the 1st as its national republic day, and people still think this is an April Fools joke today! Not all the real stories are of a serious nature, but are so ridiculous that it is hard to believe them as fact. Stories such as the merger between rival computer software firms Square and Enix in 2003.

Looking back at the various stories it’s probably best to assume that if you aren’t sure if something you read tomorrow morning is genuine or not, it’s probably best to take it with a pinch of salt so that you aren’t labelled as an April Fool!.

Back In The Saddle

Tuesday, March 29th, 2011

Back in the office here at Gadgets Towers after a couple of weeks away whilst I was performing my civic duty of jury service. It varied between being incredibly interesting watching the prosecution and defence in turn presenting their evidence, and then incredibly frustrating as there was quite a lot of sitting around and waiting.

I’m sure that everyone reading this is well aware that this coming Sunday is Mothering Sunday here in the UK, I will of course be popping to visit my own mother this weekend. As I was thinking about this blog post I suddenly realised that I didn’t know anything about the history behind Mother’s Day and how it had all started. I managed to find an article here which does a good job of summing up the origins of what was likely an ancient version of Mother’s Day from Ancient Egyptian, Greek, and Roman times, and how the celebration has changed over the years to give us the day as we know it today.

There is a group of people who lump mother’s day in with valentines day, fathers day, and various other ‘Hallmark Holidays’. Pointing to the commercialisation of the event, and the loss of meaning due to this. They may have a point, but there is nothing to stop any of us celebrating Mother’s Day without the need for expensive cards or gifts. I’m sure if you asked any mother they would be perfectly happy just spending some quality time with their children, and maybe given an extra hand around the house.

Of course should you want to shower your mother with gifts then you need look no further than our Mother’s Day section. Remember that orders need to be placed by 2pm on Thursday, and Express delivery selected to ensure that your order reaches you in time!

Mothers Day

What a week

Friday, March 25th, 2011

Hey

Well it’s been a busy week here at Gadgets, there has been lots going on since I last posted. Too much to put in one post really, especially as its Friday and the sun is shining. Oh and I get to go home shortly.

So I’ll just fill you in on last Friday and the rest can wait for another time.

As you are probably aware this time last week was Red Nose Day, there was all sorts of fun stuff going on to raise money. There were people wearing red items, a yummy cake sale, although the cake I bought wasn’t so yummy (sorry York-Sea!) and my favourite activity was the pie throwing at the managers! :)

Also on Friday Walkers announced the winner of the Clash of the comics competition, you may remember we were selected to receive some samples from Walkers ahead of the competition to do our own taste test. We didn’t quite get it right this time as our winner was Jimmy Con Carrne and the official winner was Stephen Fry up! Oh well, some people have no taste.

The competition managed to raise a staggering 1.2 million from all the sales of the special flavoured crisp. If you head over to their site you can see the losers receiving their forfeit, a painful waxing! Ouch!

Talking of Walkers they are due to release a brand new flavour and we have been lucky enough to get some samples again. We’ll be digging into those shortly and I’ll let you know how we get on next week.

Walkers New Flavour

That’s it from me, I hope the sun is shining where ever you are and that you get to enjoy some of it!

Happy bidding!

Hey Everyone

Dirk is off this week so as usual I’m filling in for him.

Over the last couple of weeks we’ve been having a bit of a clear out of the offices and we now have a huge collection of items! Most of them are products that have been used for photographing along with a few other items. They all work perfectly however due to lack of packaging and such they can’t go back into stock.  So rather than throwing them away or leave them to gather more dust we thought we’d try and find them all a good home.

We are auctioning all the items off on Ebay, you can find more details on our new clearance page

Ebay-page

All items will start with no initial listing price and no reserve, so there could be some real bargains to be had for anyone wanting to give a gadget a good home. More items will be added every week so keep checking back.

Happy bidding!!

Shower Power!

Wednesday, March 9th, 2011

The wind-up radio is so far without a doubt the ruler of the world of eco gadgets. Brining radio to everyone around the world without the need for costly batteries or electricty it also paved the way for other wind up gadgets such as torches, and walkie talkies. Today sees the release of what I see as being another ingenious gadget; the shower powered radio. If you are a regular watcher of Dragon’s Den you may remember this particular gadget as the inventor, Vivian Blick who incidentally worked with Trevor Baylis on the wind-up radio, appeared with the H2O radio, only to see the Dragons fail to invest. Undeterred he has gone away and managed to bring the H20 Radio to market anyway.

The Radio fixes simply to the shower hose, and is powered by the flowing water driving a micro turbine inside the radio, providing enough power for you to tune into your favourite stations and sing along in the shower, and who doesn’t like a good sing to start their morning!?

If you are of the green disposition there are many energy saving gadgets to be found in our Eco section, including some ingenious wind up items, but not any water powered ones… just yet

What Can You Do For Mum This Mother’s Day…?

Monday, March 7th, 2011

As you may have noticed, our Mother’s Day section is now live on our site, and filled with a vast array of great gift idea’s for the most special lady in all our lives! There are a few weeks to go until April the 3rd for you to make sure you’re fully prepared, but we don’t think that we can ever be ready early enough, or do enough for our mums every Mother’s Day.

It can be difficult to understand just how much our mum’s do for us, even if we don’t realise it. I think that the only real way to know what a mum does, or goes through on behalf of all of their children is to be a mother yourself. They have a bond closer, and more unconditional than anyone else ever will. It doesn’t matter what any of us do, mum will always be there for us, and Mother’s Day is the one day a year that we can really show that we appreciate what they do for us. Mother’s Day can be seen as an inconvenience, another day aside from Birthdays and Christmas when we have to buy presents and cards, but we don’t. In fact Mum’s tend to ask very little of their children, but the least we can do is show our mum that we care, that we appreciate what they do for us, and that we love them as unconditionally as they love us.

I heard this song a long time ago, but I think it perfectly sums up some of things that mothers do for us all, without us even thinking about it. This Mother’s Day make sure you make your mum feel truly special.

And Now, For Some Good News!

Thursday, March 3rd, 2011

Everywhere you look at the moment the news seems to be filled with doom and gloom. Whether at home, or overseas the papers are filled with stories detailing natural disasters, difficult economic times, and other such depressing stories. This being the case I’ve been looking out for news stories to make us all feel a bit better, some good news for a change!

You don’t need to look too hard just past the front pages, where if you are Irish you can be glad of your team’s win over the English in the cricket yesterday. Alternatively if you are English you can forget the cricket and instead bask in the Rugby Union team’s victory over the French at the weekend. If you happen to be a Birmingham fan there is your Carling Cup win also from the weekend, the club’s first trophy for some 60-odd years, and well deserved it was too!

It’s not just sporting good news either, for all you Apple fans the iPad 2 was officially unveiled yesterday and will go on sale on Friday the 25th of March.

The story that caught my eye however, and showed that there is always something good to come out of even the darkest days, was the story of an abandoned puppy, left on the step of a veterinary surgery and had to be put down because it was deemed too ill. The next day however the puppy, now called Wall-e was found to be alive and well, and is currently going through the process of being re-homed, showing that things can work out Ok in the end.

Have you had any good news this week, why not share it and help cheer everyone up a little?

Oscar and St. David

Tuesday, March 1st, 2011

Sunday night was the 83rd academy awards ceremony which took place in Hollywood, and everyone here at Gadgets.co.uk would like to congratulate all those who had anything to do with the King’s Speech and won awards, anyone who has seen the film I’m sure would agree that all those who did win were more than deserving. I thoroughly enjoyed it when I went to see it with my mum in mid January, and from what I understand it is still doing very well, at least in part due to the coverage it has received thanks to the Oscars. If you haven’t seen it yet what are you waiting for!?

AOL Celebrity news has told of how Colin Firth, having finally won his Oscar, could very nearly have lost it just hours later had it not been for an eagle eyed, and honest, toilet attendant! Apparently as he celebrated at various after show parties Mr Firth got slightly tipsy and left his statuette for best actor on the cistern of a toilet, and upon making his way back to the revelries, was only reunited with his little golden chum thanks to a toilet attendant who had spotted it had been left behind and ran after him!

As you may also be aware today is St. David’s day, so you will more than likely see any Welsh people wearing a leek or a daffodil to celebrate the day of their patron saint. One of the most widely told and most well known stories about the life and deeds of Saint David is a miracle he performed at the Synod of Llanddewi Brefi when it was to be decided if he were to become and Archbishop. The story says a great crown gathered to see, and hear him speak, a crowd so vast that one individual near the back was heard to remark that they would not be able to see or hear him. Apparently upon these words the ground under St. David’s feet rose and lifted him until all could see, and hear him. Perhaps unsurprisingly it was decided shortly after this that he would indeed become an Archbishop. The Welsh people see St David as an important figure, particularly in helping them retain their language and national heritage, and his day is always celebrated widely and enthusiastically.

So I shall leave you today by saying “Dydd Gwyl Dewi hapus!” or Happy St. David’s Day!
